The horse’s muscular system is made up of over 700 individual muscles, accounting for over 60% of their body weight. These muscles support the skeleton and create motion through contraction and relaxation of muscles around the joint. When muscles contract and cannot achieve full relaxation they can remain shortened and create areas of pain, which can cause muscle spasm and tension, putting stress on surrounding areas.
Problems are escalated as the horse adjusts its way of going to compensate for the original area of discomfort – placing additional strain on other areas throughout the body and predisposing the horse to further injury.
Equine Sports Massage stimulates circulation to supply oxygen and nutrients to the damaged areas while releasing lactic acid from the muscles. Improved blood flow relieves congestion in the body and reduces inflammation and swelling in the joints.
Additional benefits from massage therapy:
- Creates balance in the body
- Increased range of motion and flexibility
- Improved posture, muscle tone and coat
- Increases the production of synovial fluid in the joints
- Helps maintain the whole body in better physical condition
